Dr. Bates is a graduate of LaSalle University and Temple University School of Medicine. He completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, Virginia. He served in the U.S. Navy for eleven years including a tour at MCAS Cherry Point as a Wing and NASA flight surgeon. He served overseas as the Musculoskeletal Department Head at US Naval Hospital Sigonella, Italy. He then completed a Total Joint Fellowship at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, specializing in Adult Reconstructive Surgery.
He is board certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery. He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and candidate member of the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons.
Dr. Bates has a broad range of orthopedic knowledge with a special area of interest in arthritis, fracture care, sports and work related injuries. His field of expertise includes arthroscopic and minimally invasive surgical techniques. He is dedicated to the team approach in patient care, involving local therapists, primary care physicians and the patient’s family to ensure a recovery and return to activities.
Dr. Bates practices at Carolinas Center for Surgery and Operates at The Surgical Center of Morehead City and Carteret General Hospital. He lives with his wife and children and has a passion for outdoor sports and activities.
