Dr. Juozas (Joe) Zavadzkas – known by his patients as “Dr. Z” – was born in Chicago, Illinois and later moved to Venezuela with his family during his childhood years. He completed his basic education in Venezuela, and then chose to relocate to Guadalajara, Mexico to complete his medical training. After graduating in the top 10% of his medical school class and earning multiple academic honors, he moved to Charleston, South Carolina to pursue further training in the Basic Sciences and General Surgery. Prior to his surgical training, Dr. Zavadzkas par ticipated in nationally recognized cardiothoracic research at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. He then matriculated into the General Surgery residency program at MUSC. His surgical training has been highlighted with many accolades including being voted intern of the year, presenting at several national academic conferences, and being nominated for many teaching awards.
Dr. Z has published extensively in several peer reviewed journals, and participated in numerous scientific meetings. He holds active memberships in multiple medical and surgical societies, and continues to support these organizations. His interest range from minimally invasive abdominal surgery, gallbladder disease, oncology, and weight loss surgery; however, he enjoys the full breadth of general surgery.
Dr. Zavadzkas lives in Carteret County with his wife Kathy, and two teen daughters Vanessa and Lucia. In his free time, he enjoys biking, sailing, and any other outdoor activities.
